Reviewing the Martin Yale 1648 High Speed Automatic Letter Opener

The Martin Yale 1648 Automatic Letter Opener is capable of handing upwards of 12,000 #10 envelopes per day. (Yes, you read that right: 12,000.) When using the opener, all you need to do is put a stack of envelopes into the machine. (Make sure the stack's no more than five inches high.) It will automatically feed them in, open them, and spit them out. It couldn't be easier.

The 1648 can handle #10 envelopes that are up to 3/8" thick, but it can also handle larger envelopes, including those that are 4.25" x 9.5" in size. This is a great feature to have because it means very few envelopes will need to be opened by hand, even the bigger ones. Also, the 1648 has enclosed blades, so it's very safe to use. (No risk of cutting off your fingers!) Finally, the machine has an adjustment knob that lets you control how far into the envelope the blades will cut.

Since the 1648 is a remake of an older machine, it obviously has a new design. And because of the new design, the machine cuts off a little bit of the top of each envelope. This means it's effective as a letter opener, but it also brings with it the possibility of some documents accidentally getting cut if they're too close to the envelope's top. To prevent this, you should jog the envelopes before running them through the 1648. This will help ensure the documents are lined up properly.

Finally, the 1648 has blades and belts that will wear down over time. However, the machine should run well for years, so it's not like you'll have to replace the blades two months after getting the machine. Just keep in mind that at some point, these parts will have to be replaced, kind of like the brakes on your car.
